A citrusy feel from the hops, a pleasant bitterness, and a malty flavor, with a resinous taste and a subtle sweetness like vanilla or caramel. A collaboration with American metal band Deftones.
An India Pale Ale crafted through a collaboration between Belching Beaver and American alternative metal band “Deftones.”
Deftones' lead vocalist, Chino Moreno, said he became hooked on craft beer after treating himself to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale when he was young and broke.
As a craft beer enthusiast, he conceived the idea of a collaboration between his band and a brewery, choosing Belching Beaver as his first partner.
As discussions rapidly progressed, Belching Beaver didn't just use the band's name. Instead, they meticulously shared brewing ideas, flavor details, and prototypes with Chino Moreno to craft the recipe for this collaboration beer.
Chino was moved by this approach and his significant involvement in the process of creating a new beer, leading Deftones and Belching Beaver to form a strong partnership without collaborating with other breweries.
Their first collaboration beer was Deftones Phantom Bride.
It is now a core product of the brewery.
The name was taken from the title of a single (note) that was slated for release around the same time.
While this was partly due to miraculously good timing for the release, it also served as a highly effective, unprecedented, and unconventional promotion.
Meanwhile, beer enthusiasts highly praised its taste, earning it a score of 97 on RateBeer.
Using Amarillo, Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic hops, personally selected by Chino Moreno, in exquisite balance, it's a drinkable IPA with a prominent hop character.
It pours a hazy, bright yellow color with a white head.
Aromas of lemon-like citrus, slightly sweet ripe melon, and herbaceous, grassy notes waft from the glass.
The flavor blends hop-derived citrus and pleasant bitterness with a cereal-like maltiness, along with a resinous note and a subtle sweetness like vanilla or caramel.
The body is medium, with a mild and smooth finish.
The bitterness of the hops and the sweetness from the malt complement each other, leading to a dry finish.
A highly accomplished, smash-hit IPA that has captivated many hop heads.
Note: Included in Deftones' 8th album "Gore," released in April 2016.
