A masterpiece rated 100 points on Ratebeer, possessing all the elements of a pleasant-smelling single malt Scotch whisky, oak and smoky notes, caramel, roasted malt, spice, and dark fruits.
The new "Barrel-Aged Series" is one of Founders' identities.
The fifth release in the series is "Backwoods Bastard," a bourbon barrel-aged version of their classic Scotch ale, Dirty Bastard.
It's a masterpiece that boasts all the elements of a beautiful, pleasant-smelling single malt Scotch whisky, bourbon with oak aromas, smoky notes, caramel, roasted malt, earthy spices, and nuances of dark fruits.
This Backwoods Bastard rests deep underground in bourbon barrels.
This Scotch ale matures in a cave located about 85 feet (about 25m) below ground.
Founders utilizes disused caves, originally used for gypsum mining, as their aging cellars.
As of April 2016, they possessed over 9,000 bourbon barrels, making it one of the largest barrel-aging projects in America.
This deep underground area naturally maintains an ideal cellar temperature for beer aging.
The color is a deep brown, almost black.
The aroma is of rich bourbon, followed by malty notes of caramel, dark fruits, raisins, and toffee, as well as oak and vanilla.
The flavor is similar, with a more pronounced oak presence.
A rich flavor that suggests great depth.
The smooth, creamy richness on the palate is reminiscent of a milk stout, but the robust full body of a Scotch ale firmly reminds you of its true nature.
Its dangerous drinkability makes you forget its high alcohol content of 11%.
This is a bottle to be enjoyed while relaxing on a sofa.
