Rich, Smoky Scotch Ale Brewed with 7 Malts

The #1 selling Scotch Ale in the US, and a foundational product that defined the brewery's "Brewed for Us" philosophy.

A rich and intense flavor from 7 malts, with a hint of peat/smoke and hop bitterness.

A masterpiece beer worthy of the name Dirty Bastard.

First released in 2000, it was one of the beers that spearheaded the "Extreme Beer" boom.

Three years after its founding in 2000, Founders was on the verge of bankruptcy.

The landlord had threatened to "chain the doors shut if the rent isn't paid within a week," and they hadn't paid national taxes for some time.

They had failed.

But sometimes failure makes people reckless and daring.

Co-founders Mike Engbers and Dave Stevens, cornered, thought, "If we're going to go bankrupt anyway, let's brew the beer we want to drink."

They stopped brewing all their previous pale ales, amber ales, and wheat ales, and instead brewed "Dirty Bastard," an 8.5% ABV Scotch Ale.

From then on, their reputation rapidly grew, and they were able to escape the brink of bankruptcy.

When poured, it reveals a dark ruby color with a tan head.

Aromas of caramel, dark fruits, raisins, and toffee from the malts dominate, with a subtle hint of citrus.

On the palate, a sensual sweetness from the malt washes over, leading to flavors of toffee, plum, and a smoky note like tobacco.

The finish is smoky and bitter, with a slight warmth from the alcohol.

"Many people fall in love with Dirty Bastard even if they don't know the Scotch Ale style (Scotch Ale is a strong ale said to have originated in Edinburgh, Scotland in the 19th century. Also known as Wee Heavy. Generally a full-bodied beer with a deep copper to brown color, characterized by roasted malt flavors). If you like bold and intense flavors," says Dave.

It is the brewery's third most popular product after All Day IPA and Centennial IPA, and an excellent example embodying Founders' approach to brewing.
