Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, captain and lieutenant of the "Lewis and Clark Expedition," the first expedition of white Americans formed at Jefferson's direction, also enjoyed eating it frequently.

From these facts, the pawpaw was deemed "True American," and combined with the word "Patriotic," it was named "Patriotic Paw Paw."
