The World's Best Barrel-Aged Stout, Driving Beer Geeks Wild and Camping Out Before its Release
The world's best barrel-aged stout, driving beer geeks wild and camping out before its release. Among the beers described as having a "cult following," one that particularly captivates beer geeks is Kentucky Breakfast Stout, or KBS.
This limited edition Breakfast Stout, made with chocolate and coffee, is aged for one year in Kentucky bourbon barrels.
In the US, the enthusiasm for this beer is so great that people queue up and camp out not only at the brewery but also at retailers.
KBS rests in bourbon barrels deep within a cave, about 85 feet (approx. 25m) below ground.
The aging cellar, repurposed from a gypsum mine, is dubbed America's largest barrel-aging project.
Aging at the optimal natural temperature produces a sweet, nutty flavor and an exceptionally smooth mouthfeel.
The brewery suggests the best way to enjoy it is to "decant KBS at room temperature (around 15℃) to let it aerate, then drink it from a brandy glass."
It overflows with aromas of roasted coffee, cafe latte, milk chocolate, vanilla, oak, and bourbon.
On the palate, a perfect balance of roasted notes, sweetness, and a hint of hop bitterness unfolds.
It's full-bodied with a silky smooth mouthfeel.
The finish is long, with bourbon, alcoholic warmth, and a slight malty sweetness.
In 2014, it was selected as the world's best beer by the beer review site RateBeer.
It also received a perfect 100-point score on BeerAdvocate, making it a world-class beer that impresses beer geeks.
