A bourbon barrel-aged stout with a flavor reminiscent of concentrated roasted coffee, cafe latte, and milk chocolate. Received a perfect score of 100 on a beer rating site.
There aren't many beers in the United States that can be described as "cult favorite," but one of the most passionately coveted is Founders' Kentucky Breakfast Stout, or KBS.
This masterpiece is made by aging the limited edition Breakfast Stout beer, which is infused with chocolate and coffee, for a year in Kentucky bourbon barrels. It is an ultra-limited item that many beer geeks are desperate to get their hands on.
In the United States, people are known to stay overnight in line at stores the day before the release, and many liquor stores have rules that state that "each person can only purchase one or two bottles by purchasing tickets in advance."
If you miss out on a ticket, you'll have to spend hours visiting liquor stores until you're lucky enough to find one.
KBS rests in bourbon barrels deep underground.
This stout is aged in a cave approximately 85 feet below ground level.
The caves were originally used for mining gypsum, but they are now abandoned and used by Founders as a aging cellar.
As of April 2016, the project has over 9,000 bourbon barrels and is said to be the largest barrel aging project in the United States.
This area, located deep underground, naturally has the perfect cellar temperature for maturing beer.
Aging here gives KBS its sweet, nutty flavor and incredibly smooth mouthfeel.
Barrel-aged beer is now becoming more and more popular in the United States, but when KBS was first introduced, it was not a category that received much attention in the United States.
It was first released in 2002 as draft only, and in 2003 it was released in limited bottle packaging as well.
Incidentally, the first KBS was aged in two barrels that had been used for Jack Daniel's.
It wasn't Kentucky, and it wasn't a bourbon barrel (Jack Daniel's is Tennessee whiskey, produced in Tennessee).
It is an American whiskey, but it belongs to a different category than bourbon.
The recipe was soon changed, resulting in the flavor we know today.
Founders describes KBS as "a beer that has continued to lead the barrel aging movement in America."
According to the brewery, the best way to enjoy KBS is to "decant the KBS at room temperature (around 15°C), allow it to air out, and then drink it from a brandy glass."
It looks like a jet black liquid with a creamy dark brown head on top.
The aroma is concentrated roasted coffee, cafe latte, milk chocolate, vanilla, oak and bourbon that overflows from the glass.
When you put it in your mouth, the roasted flavor and sweetness of coffee and chocolate envelops your entire tongue, while at the same time, the bourbon, vanilla, and slight bitterness of hops spread in a balanced way.
It's so good that you hesitate to drink it, but once you do, the finish is pleasant with a lingering taste of bourbon, warm alcohol, and a slight malt sweetness.
Full bodied and silky smooth on the palate.
In 2014, it was selected as the "world's best beer" by the beer review site Ratebeer, and continues to receive perfect ratings not only from Ratebeer but also from BeerAdvocate.
This barrel-aged stout is so rare and delicious that it will make you scream with joy; it is truly one of the best beers in the world.
