A refreshing finish with a good balance of citrus aroma from the generous use of hops and a firm bitterness. Awarded gold medals at GABF for two consecutive years!
Union Jack is a classic West Coast-style IPA that aggressively features hops while also possessing a remarkably good balance.
While it is an American craft beer, it is named "Union Jack" to evoke England, paying homage to the IPA style, which originated during the British Empire era, and to David Walker, the British co-founder of Firestone Walker.
Unlike their flagship product DBA, this beer is brewed with primary fermentation taking place entirely in stainless steel tanks.
Launched in February 2008, this IPA, the first in the brewery's "Jack" series, uses hops generously and unstintingly. Magnum is used for bittering, Cascade and Centennial are added in the late boil for aroma, and then Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial, Citra, Chinook, and Simcoe are used for two rounds of dry hopping, resulting in an impressive array of grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine, apricot, and citrus flavors. This is contrasted by the sweetness of the pale malt, which maintains overall balance.
A slight, pleasant acidity is felt in the finish, and combined with a refreshing and ideal level of carbonation, it has a very smooth mouthfeel.
This beer, which honors the British-originated IPA style while "uniting" American innovation, further solidifies the reputation of the "American West Coast" as it continues to drive the IPA revolution.
It won a silver medal at the 2008 World Beer Cup, and gold medals at the Great American Beer Festival in 2008 and 2009.
