Modern Times Lomaland (473ml)

Complex yet drinkable saison style with a light, hoppy finish

A complex yet drinkable Belgian-style farmhouse ale that's more of a throwback than a hybrid.

The yeast they use is distinctive, and Dupont (a brewery that has been brewing since 1844 and embodies the history of Belgium)

It is fermented using a special blend of 95% yeast from Belgian brewery Dupont (which produces the most popular saison in Belgium, Saison Dupont) and 5% yeast from Westmalle (first brewed in 1836, one of the few breweries that can call themselves Trappist (monastery) breweries).

This is because traditional Belgian yeast has the characteristic that its strength weakens as fermentation progresses and becomes "lazy" towards the end of fermentation.

To prevent this, mixing it with an aggressive yeast helps complete fermentation more quickly.

Lomaland also used only Saison Dupont yeast during product development.

The taste was fine, but the speed of fermentation did not meet commercial standards.

So we blended in some Westmalle yeast to improve the fermentation process.

When poured into a glass, the slightly hazy golden liquid had a firm head, making it clear just from the looks of it that this was a delicious saison.

On the nose, there is a distinct yeasty aroma, freshly baked bread dough, and hints of white pepper.

The fruity nuances are not too overbearing, and the herbal spice aroma from Saaz hops balances the overall flavor.

The overall taste is dry, with the pepper from the yeast spreading the moment you put it in your mouth.

It has a cracker-like flavor due to the use of Pilsner Malt, Wheat Malt, and corn, and is very fresh.

The finish leaves a pleasant bitterness on the tongue.

A typical saison with a medium body that is neither too light nor too heavy and strong carbonation.

The name comes from "Lomaland," a beautiful yet crazy utopian community that once existed in Point Loma, San Diego, where the brewery is located, and the name comes from the first settlers of Point Loma.
