Creamy and smooth on the palate, with a full body and a superb taste often described as America's best stout.

"Old No. 38" is named after an old steam locomotive known as the "Skunk Train" that operated on the California Western Railroad (a 64km railway from Fort Bragg to Willits, originally built for transporting timber. Due to the beautiful scenery along the line, it is now popular as a tourist railway.) (No. 38 was dismantled and no longer exists.) The style is a dry stout. It has a creamy and smooth mouthfeel and a solid body despite its 5.4% alcohol content. You can taste the toastiness of roasted malt, espresso coffee, bitter chocolate, and aromas and flavors like dark fruits. The subdued sweetness of the malt is also clearly present, leading to a dry and refreshing finish. This superb stout was praised by world-renowned beer critic Michael Jackson as "undoubtedly America's best stout."
